My Own Swordsman (Wu Lin Wai Zhuan, 武林外传) is one of China's most highly re-broadcast television series in recent years. As a result, the film version of My Own Swordsman has become an example of a Chinese low-budget film that has achieved high box office sales. Since it premiered in January 2011, the film has earned over 100 million RMB (US $15 million) in the box office. The numbers are a big deal because it is rare for q Chinese low-budget film to recover its costs, let alone make profits. "If we can achieve 200 million box office, we will make ten times profits,” the director Shang Jing said to HunanTV.com.

While the film version uses the same background and actors, it differentiates itself from the original 2006 television series by telling an entirely new story. The screenwriter Ning Cai Shen revised the script fifteen times to make the best version. The story was inspired by a hot topic in China right now: the price of housing, an issue that many audience members can sympathize with. Another reason for the film's success is the popularity of the main actors. Many of the original television actors, including Yao Chen and Yan Ni, have become big stars in China.
